Elmer and Aunt edith (DeDe) circa 1916.
John Hakanen's brother, Elmer with John and Mary's daughter Edith, born in 1915. Elmer was the eighth of John's 10 siblings. He came from New York to live with the Hakanens in Nanty-Glo shortly after Edith was born. Elmer remained with the Hakanens and was 84 when he passed on December 27, 1973. Elmer would have been around 26 years old at the time of this photo. He was the one in the household who kept things up-to-date. He would buy a new automobile ever couple years. He bought the radio for the back living room and then when TV came in he bought a TV. The men would sit in the back living room and listen or watch. I remember the first TV was a black and white and Elmer bought a plastic film with blue across the top, yellow through the middle and green across the bottom. It was supposed to give the appearance of a colored TV. Especially for westerns. It sounds a bit goofy now but we enjoyed it. The women would sit in the middle living room and visit. We would all go to the kitchen for coffee and neasua , a Finnish coffee bread. Occasionally the men would gather around the kitchen table and play poker. I think they had a certain night for poker (probably Friday nights). Uncle Bill and Aunt Edith would come most week-ends. I think Uncle Bill really liked visiting there.
