Elmer with Friend
We believe this picture was taken around the time Elmer moved from New York to Nanty-Glo. Which is around the time that Aunt Edith was born. The picture is the front of a postcard sent to Elmer's brother Sam Hakanen in Warren Ohio. The writing on the back of the postcard (in Finn) was translated, as best they could, by cousins Bill and Pirkko. The translation of the card to Samuel Hakanen on 04.08.1918 Nanty Glo, PA. is as follows:
" Received your letter from which you sent your thanks. Nothing special has happened here.. Solomon left from here, to Cleveland from where he got a card. Elmer".
My best guess about this card is: Sam's birthday is August 4 ( the date on this card). So I guess Elmer may have sent him a card or present and this is the response to a thank you Sam sent him. The postcard also provides Sam with a picture of Solomon, whom Sam never met; Also we think Solomon might be Solomon Lahti, a relative of sister Edla's husband. Perhaps a sibling. I think Solomon may have come from the New York area with Elmer to find work. He may have gotten info on a job opportunity in or around Cleveland Ohio.
Sam eventually came to the Hakanen house to live. He was sickly and in order to get health care benefits he had to live on his own. They attached a 'room' onto the garage and he lived in it in order to get health care benefits. Edith said Grandpa felt awful about the situation but had to comply with the law. All his siblings lived at Grandpas one time or another. When I lived in Nanty-Glo Elmer, Arvie, and Sam (in the room on the garage), lived at the Hakanens. After his son, Arvid, died in 1942, Mike moved in also.
